How to stop a Jack Russell chewing problem

There are a few things all dog owners need to be prepared for. Chewing is certainly one of the most common things. Jack Russells are also major chewing offenders and will chew just about everything unless you train them not to.

Why do cranes chew?

There are many factors that cause Jacks to chew on different things, but none of them indicate grudge on the part of your dog. Here are some of the main factors that contribute to chewing that may help shed light on the problem:

Simply put, when Jacks are bored they start chewing on things to occupy themselves. If this sounds suspicious, remember that humans also engage in inappropriate behavior when bored and that dogs tend to do the same.

Prevent your Jack Russell from chewing

As long as it can be controlled, chewing should not be discouraged, your dog just needs to be trained in order to know what to chew and what not to chew.

Then what to do? Well, the first thing you might want to try is to keep them busy. A lot of Jack Russell chewing is out of boredom, so does it make sense to keep them entertained? Keep them busy with exercise and simulation and they should be less likely to chew.

Also, avoid punishing them if you find them nibbling on an item. Take any household item they might be gnawing at and replace it with a toy they can chew on instead; If they agree to chew on the toy, be sure to praise them often. By responding positively when your dog chews on a toy rather than a household object, your dog is more likely to chew on the toy again in order to get the praise.

However, there is still the issue of what to do when you’re not there, and that’s where an abundance of chew toys comes in. Obviously if they have enough toys to occupy them, they will be less likely to seek out your chews and possessions, but you also have to try to keep such things out of reach anyway, so why tempt them?

However, anxiety is difficult to get rid of. When you’re home with your dog, you can calm him down if he becomes anxious, but separation anxiety is obviously more difficult to deal with. Fortunately, many puppies eventually grow out of this once they understand that you are not leaving them forever; Up until this point, try to guard against any chewing or scratching that may occur while you are gone.

Despite their forced chewing, which exists for a variety of reasons, there are plenty of things you can do to help tame this problem. Make sure your Jack enjoys several games and can’t reach your expensive items and you can leave the house with confidence.
