Although babies don’t have teeth yet, their teeth start to appear when they are about six months old. In their first years of life, all 20 of their deciduous teeth will erupt through the gums, and by the age of three, most children will have a full set of teeth. When a baby is about 6 months old, the four front teeth often erupt through the gums — although some babies only have their first teeth when they are 12 to 14 months old.

When their teeth start to come through, some children become irritable, picky, won’t sleep, drool often, or lose their appetite. When babies are teething, they usually don’t have diarrhea, fever, or rashes. Therefore, if they experience such symptoms and continue to be agitated and uncomfortable, consult your doctor.

First visit to the dentist

As soon as your baby’s first tooth appears, make an appointment to see a doctor. According to the ADA, the first dental visit should take place within six months after the first tooth erupts, not after the first birthday. Don’t put it off until they are about to start school or when there is a problem.

Teach your child to be comfortable with good dental habits. Usually, during the first visit, the dentist will examine your child’s mouth just to check for tooth growth, and also to make your child feel comfortable. To make a dental visit more convenient:

    Schedule a time during the day so the kids can rest well and cooperate.

    Keep your fears to yourself. Children can easily sense your feelings, so focus on the positive aspects.

    Do not use a dentist visit to punish/threaten your child.

    Don’t use a dental visit as a bribe.

    Talk positively to your child about going to the dentist.

At a dentist visit, expect the dentist to:

    Examination for oral problems or tooth decay.

    reveal whether there are any risks of developing dental caries;

    brushing teeth and giving tips for daily care;

    talk about teething, pacifier use, or thumb sucking habits;

    Discuss the necessary treatment and set the next appointment.

fluoride

The mineral called fluoride is found naturally in all water sources, such as lakes, oceans, and rivers. Sometimes, it is also included in toothpaste, mouthwash, and a number of community tap water. Infants and young children who do not get enough fluoride may be at a higher risk of tooth decay because fluoride protects tooth enamel from it.

Fluoride also repairs weakened enamel. Since bottled water does not contain fluoride, children who drink this regularly or tap water without fluoride do not enjoy its benefits. If you suspect whether or not your tap water contains fluoride, ask your local/state health department or water supplier.

pacifiers

It is very common for infants and young children to suck their thumb, finger or pacifier. When the pacifier is dipped in sweet foods such as honey, sugar, and sweetened juice, it can cause tooth decay.

Tooth decay can also start when saliva containing cavity-causing bacteria is passed from the mother or caregiver to the child. Also, when either of them puts a spoon or lollipop to feed the baby in their mouth, bacteria can be passed on to the baby.

teething Teething is one of the first human rituals.
