However, from the name “mouth guard”, we conclude that this type of device does not solve the problem, but only hopes to prevent damage to the teeth. It is clear – what guards the mouth is … the mouth! “Device” and “orthosis” are other names for a “mouth guard”.

Neuromuscular dentistry

Neuromuscular dentistry takes a more technologically advanced approach to the use of dental appliances. By measuring the electrical activity of the muscles of biting and chewing, practitioners of this approach determine movement patterns, posture, and dental pressure and then prepare a device to retrain the nervous system’s control of those muscles. The common desired result comes within a few months; The cost ranges from $5,000 to $25,000.

Tooth reshaping

Dentists have found that by changing the fit of the upper and lower teeth, they can change the neuromuscular control of the muscles of biting and chewing and thus relieve TMJ syndrome. This approach assumes that the cause of excessive jaw tension is a misalignment between the upper and lower teeth. His method is to reshape the tooth surfaces through a polishing process to improve fit. This method does not get results. By changing the fit between the teeth (by removing lines that prevent regular contact between the teeth), the process changes the experience of biting and chewing.

This change introduces a new experience of biting and chewing so that the usual patterns of muscle control are interrupted, allowing new movement patterns to be formed. However, it is an indirect approach that involves continuous dental surgery in a series of steps for a good fit. While its effects may be beneficial, it is also expensive and invasive.

new technology

Clinical physical education

Understanding that we are dealing with conditioned postural reflexes that govern muscle tension, one way to naturally treat TMJ disorders is to retrain conditioned postural reflexes – in fact, to eliminate the residual shock reaction and relieve dental stress.

Simplified description of the clinical physical education technique:

With teeth slightly apart, grab the chin with both hands, with the thumbs hooked under the chin.

Bite gently, but keep the teeth from meeting your handle.

Feel the bite muscles. Remember the feeling of chewing.

Do two things slowly and at the same time: (1) Relax the biting motion. (2) Tilt your head back (instead of leaving your jaw open). Your hands keep exactly where they were.

On the first easy stroke to open more, bite back, but keep the jaws from closing with your fist.

Feel the bite muscles. Remember the feeling of chewing.

Relax into the bite while tilting your head back slightly to an easy level.

Continue to your limit (without forcing).

repeats.

This new technology, which uses natural biting/relaxation actions in an unusual way, quickly (almost instantly) retrains your biting and chewing muscles, with lasting results that increase with practice. Although it seems harmless, it is very effective (and must be tested by the reader before forming an opinion).

By applying this basic technique to the different directions of jaw movement—opening and closing motions, side-to-side grinding motions, and anterior and posterior jaw motions—the various symptoms of TMD/TMJ syndrome—headaches, earaches, bruxism, bad bite, ear infection, postural changes, and limited ability to open or close the jaws—resolve into normal function.

Common treatment methods Mouth guards/devices/splints Neuromuscular dentistry Tooth reshaping Mouth guards/devices/splints Mouth guards do not cure.
