Alaskan Malamute Training – Chewing Problems
Alaskan Malamute dogs can be quite playful indoors but not when they start chewing on the furniture. Read on and learn how to overcome this problem as part of Alaskan Malamute training.
Dogs chew and gnaw a lot of things for a variety of reasons. New puppies and dogs may do this because they are teething. They are exploring the new environment in which they live. Alternately, your dog must be really bored because he’s just looking to kill time.
Watch your dog closely and catch him in the act. Be firm and let him know what he did was wrong. Dogs learn “in the moment” so this method works best. Teach him acceptable behavior like chewing a toy.
If you are not around all the time, it is best to put your dog in a pen or outside. Never leave it unattended for long periods of time especially around high value furniture.
Give your dog something to chew on or better yet, do something different. Small twigs and twigs from trees provide great distraction. Dogs just love to chew on wood. Large beef marrow should be enough to keep him busy.
You can also purchase chew toys in various designs at your local pet store. Some even benefit from brushing your dog’s teeth. Getting too much exercise must be stressing him out.
Chewing is a minor problem, but it can cost you a lot to fix. Address this problem before it gets out of control.
