Paranoid Android.

This literally represents Test Shot #1 from my Sigma DP3 Merrill.

It arrived yesterday.

I charged the battery up, and fired some shots without even glancing at the manual or camera settings.

I’ve already decided whether I like the DP3.

(I do)

  1. I’m surprised Peter. I hope you enjoy the new camera. I love my DP1 and DP3 Merrills but somehow I thought you were going to pass.

The extra processing step via the clunky Sigma Photo Pro software is still a pain, battery life is very poor, and it’s pretty much base-ISO only if you want to maintain image quality – but the results are often astonishing.

I use a Voigtlander 75mm optical viewfinder on my DP3 which is a nice experience if you can cope with the parallax error.

    • I’ve been resisting this for 18 months, but the IQ was just too good to pass. My initial reaction re: the ergonomics and software: I’m pleasantly surprised (maybe because I remember how slow/clunky the DP1 was — they definitely improved things).

The IQ surprises me too – it’s better than I thought (and I thought it was going to be astounding).

      —Peter.

From what I’ve read, there’s much that I’d expect you to love. It’s easy to take along, neither threatening nor distracting; the lens is a slightly wide portrait tele, well suited to the sensor, and quite sharp across the frame; then there’s the reported fact that the red channel is a little less saturated than any other “compact”, which I guess might suit skin tones quite well. Personally though, I suspect that the real “test” will be how you react to the slightly fiddly software and workflow over time.

And far be it from me to complain about rhymes, but I’m having some trouble matching this title to those eyes… if it were me I might have gone with something like the triple entendre: “Breathless”.

Oh, that colour…yeah, I see what you mean. Well, I look forward to seeing what you do with it and how you go with using it. I heard it’s a brilliant but frustrating camera.

Peter, if you get a chance, how does this handle the black and white world? I’m wondering how that sensor would render different shades of grey, and if you could get a bit more depth. Or, is the advantage basically a ‘color’ one? Keep up the great work.

Peter is this the original DP3 or the Quattro? Nice result SoC.

  6. Hi Peter,

Will pick up my Sigma DP2 Merrill this weekend!
I eager to test it out.
    Very nice picture indeed.

    Best, Peter
